Literacy and Language Development for the Deaf

Our organization was formed in April 2011 to meet the needs of the Deaf community in Myanmar. Deaf people are a minority with their own language – Sign Language – and their own Deaf culture. Deaf people have difficulty understanding a written Bible which reflects a spoken language they can’t hear, so they need Scripture in their own language. Sign Language is a visual language that doesn’t have a printed form, so our Bible is in video format. Our organization has a Board and 12 staff members: 2 Hearing and 10 Deaf.

Vision: For the Deaf in Myanmar to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth (1 Tim. 2:4)

Goals:

1) to translate the Bible into Sign Language for the Deaf in Myanmar.

2) to teach the Bible using Sign Language

Activities:

1) translating Scripture and Bible stories into Myanmar Sign Language

2) Bible teaching in Myanmar Sign Language

3) Awareness-raising about Deaf and Sign Language in churches in Myanmar
